Product Description
Fulbright Award winning tabla drummer Daniel Paul has for decades been providing his traditional accompaniment skills to many artists of varying eastern influence. From classical Indian musicians and dancers of the Ali Akbar College, to the techno-laced chants of Lost at Last, and now, on world-tour with the 'kirtan" vocals of 2003 grammy nominee, Jai Uttal Daniel continues to create the ecstatic tabla rhythms that move this ancient and sacred music. A graduate of the Ali Akbar College of Music under India's classical masters: Ali Akbar Khan; Zakir Hussain; Jnan Ghosh & Swapan Chauduri), Daniel has recorded for a multitude of cross-cultural projects. In 1996 he released his first CD "Rhythms Of Paradise", eaturing Daniel on the rare melody drums of India, the tabla tarong. Six to sixteen treble tabla drums placed in a semi-cicle around him, precisely tuned and then recorded with harp, flute, guitar, synth, sarod, violin and vocals. The drums ring with a metalic bell tone, like nothing you may have heard before. Than in 2003, a second CD, "Between Two Worlds", continues the fusion and threads the tarong back towards it's traditional roots, (listen to song #'s 5 ,7 & 10) while adding some interesting bedfellows along the way. In addition to berimbao, morsings and hammer dulcimer there is also more guitar, violin, fretless bass, sarod, vocals and percussion. The music is at times familiar and the musicians are all incomparable, but as the title implies, the whole project is somewhere out there,' "Between Two Worlds"!
