The purpose of this weekend retreat is to help practitioners develop and/or deepen their awareness of the subtle flow of Prana (energy) inherent to the practice of Hatha Yoga, and specific to the sequences in Vinyasa Krama.
Alignment of the body in an asana (posture) is very, very important, but overemphasis on this can often lead to gripping or forcing oneself into an asana, thereby compromising the flow of Prana. Achieving proper alignment while practicing asana, therefore requires the practitioner to have a greater awareness of this subtle flow, so that appropriate adjustments can be made while moving into, holding and moving out of an asana. The same principles of working with Prana apply when practicing Pranayama (breathing exercises) and Bandhas (locks), which are for more subtle and require even greater care to be taken.
By allowing the inherent wisdom in the breath to be the guide rather than relying solely upon the mind, one becomes more of an “observer” in their yoga practice, and will be able to sense the holding patterns in the nadis (energetic pathways). Each individual will learn to apply this awareness in their own personal practice and have greater tools to release these patterns and blocks in their physical and subtle bodies.
About Debbie Mills:Debbie began practicing Yoga Asana and yoga therapy more than 13 years ago. She later founded the Lotus Center for Yoga and the Healing Arts in 1998 to work privately with students on asana, Cikitsa (therapy), pranayama, sensory withdrawal, chanting and meditation.
In 2006, she dissolved her private practice and ceased teaching at the Jung Center in order to further experience the world and to share the yogic teachings.
Following are those who have influenced her in a deep and profound way, and enabled her to impart yogic and Ayurvedic teachings: Kumar Palana, Dr. Robert Svoboda, Sri Srivatsa Ramaswami and Swami Sundaranand. These teachings have impacted her entire life and how she lives on a daily basis. Like her teachers, she hopes to help each student to integrate these teachings in an organic and holistic way, so that they eventually
flow out of the student. Deep respect and Love are primary to her method of working with each student.
Robert Svoboda on Debbie Mills:
"Debbie Mills has been attending my lectures, workshops and retreats in the U.S. and abroad for nearly ten years. She is a devoted student of yoga and Ayurveda, and of eastern wisdom in general, and is dedicated to transmitting these teachings accurately. By applying the subtle energetic principles of asana and pranayama, her work facilitates practitioners of all levels to go deeper into their practice."- Dr. Robert Svoboda
Sri Srivatsa Ramaswami on Debbie Mills:
"I have known Debbie Mills as one of the few yogis who show equal facility and knowledge in both the philosophy and the practice of Yoga (especially Vinyasakrama which I teach). I have found her to be very keen, hardworking and having a natural disposition towards yoga. She has studied at different locations privately (more than 100 hours) and in small group classes, studying the complete Vinyasa Yoga, Yoga Sutras, Samkhya Karika, Yoga Taravalli, Yoga Rahasya and Chanting. She also has a good working knowledge of Sanskrit. I wish her well in her studies and teaching of yoga and related subjects"- Sri Srivatsa Ramaswami
